Position Information
The Department of Parks and Recreation is hiring for seasonal/temporary Facility Monitors to staff indoor and outdoor facilities. Work will include monitoring both rectangular and diamond sports fields, indoor community centers and Arlington Public School gymnasiums, indoor Arlington Public Schools Aquatic Facilities, and Teen Skate Nights held at Thomas Jefferson Community Center. As a representative of the County, Facility Monitors provide customer service to drop-in and scheduled facility users to support a safe and positive experience.

The employee will use RecTrac to document scheduling and accepted payments; process reservations; and help patrons with registration and scheduling requests. This position will be asked to work alone at times and will he be held accountable for delegated tasks. We currently need facility monitors to work a variety of shifts including morning, mid-day, afternoons, and evenings and weekends.

Duties include:

  • Ensuring facility set-up and take downs for reservations and events;
  • Turning lights on and off around the facility;
  • Reporting of attendance numbers, game scores, and any incident/accidents;
  • Ensuring facility maintenance of grounds and equipment;
  • Assisting and coordinating with Aquatic Instructors with various pool and aquatic team activities;
  • Sharing information about current events in Arlington County with customers; and
  • Selling passes and renting equipment for Skate Night.

The successful candidate for this position will have knowledge of sports, recreation, and aquatics communicate effectively, demonstrate problem solving skills, take the initiative to help others and demonstrate initiative towards tasks, and can perform under pressure.

Minimums: A high school diploma or GED and three months of experience in administering recreational programs or facility monitoring.
Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Customer service experience in sports recreation;
  • Aquatics facility management or programming; and/or
  • Lifeguard experience.
Special Requirements: If appointed to the position, the employee will wear a uniform and be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds. This position may require standing and walking for prolonged periods of time during the work shift.
The employee must maintain Adult CPR, Child CPR, First Aid, and AED training certification. Training and certification courses are provided by the County.
Work Hours: Work is seasonal in nature and hours vary and may include morning, mid-day, afternoons, and evenings on weekdays and weekends.
Work Location: Various Arlington Parks, Community and Fitness Centers, Aquatic Centers, and/or Arlington Public School locations.

Opportunities for temporary summer employment with the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation include work as Camp Directors, Assistant Directors, and support staff in camp programs throughout the County. Training begins the last week of May 2017, and continues through June 2017, approximately 38 hours of training total (online, evenings, and some weekends). Camps begin June 26th and run through August 18th. We do not operate camp on July 4th or on Saturday and Sunday.

The successful candidate will have good character and integrity, positive communication skills, reliable transportation, the ability to complete tasks as assigned and take initiative, ability to work successfully in a team environment, and comfortable participating with or supervising participants in a swimming pool environment (If applicable). Staff may be asked to be in the water with participants on swim trips and/or work with individuals with disabilities.

Position Information: Arlington County’s Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking an experienced administrative assistant to provide excellent customer service and perform as a member of a work team in the registration unit that provides a broad range of services to both internal staff and the public in a fast-paced work environment. The unit serves a diverse citizen population with a high volume of walk-in and telephone customers including customers with limited English and provides information, referral, and registration services to support the wide-range of programs offered by DPR.

Specific duties include:

  • Providing in-person and telephone assistance to citizens who are interested in classes, workshops, special events, camp offerings, programs, and facility scheduling;
  • Accepting applications and processing payments;
  • Entering a large volume of data into the automated registration and scheduling system;
  • Managing the data and compiling specialized reports for staff;
  • Maintaining and updating wait lists using a variety of software systems including Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Providing information and assistance to customers about fee and payment options, alternative classes/camps for eligible applicants;
  • Compiling participant records to ensure all required documents are available prior to the start of camps/classes;
  • Maintaining all files and records; and
  • Fulfilling administrative requests that range from mailing bills to creating complex excel spreadsheets

The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, have the ability to multi-task and pay attention to details, and be experienced with performing successfully as part of a team.  Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite functions (or similar software) with a high degree of accuracy for the preparation and maintenance of high volume data and for the creation of other correspondence and reports is essential.

NOTE:  In addition to the position listed above, a part-time, thirty (30) hours per week position is also available in the Department of Human Services to serve as primary administrative support to the Medical Director and the Psychiatric Services Bureau in the Behavioral Health Care Division.  They are seeking an experienced candidate with strong proofreading and editing skills to accurately perform data entry and utilize Microsoft Office Suite Word and Excel to compose correspondence, reports, spreadsheets and other confidential documents.  Employee will also provide financial and purchasing support and back-up receptionist duties.  This is a non-bilingual position.  Minimum requirements are the same as position above except for English/Spanish proficiency.  Location:  2120 Washington Blvd., 3rd Floor, Arlington, VA.  Hours are from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
