The mission of the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) isto provide free, nutritious, supplementalgroceries to needy individuals and families who reside in Arlington County. Clients are referred to AFAC by the Arlington County Department of Human Services, local social service agencies, churches,and schools. As a non-profit organization, AFAC relies heavily on volunteers to help us distribute our groceriestoover 1,900 families whocome to AFAC for food each week, and we rely on generous gifts of food and funds from our donors to meet thegrowingdemand for our services.

The Lead Warehouse Assistant (LWA) reports to the Assistant Director of Operations and is responsible for leading the warehouse staff in the efficient operation of the warehouse, our offsite storage facilities, and the 17 sites from which AFAC distributes food to our families. Along with the Assistant Director of Operations, the LWA will provide direction to warehouse staff on day to day warehouse operations. The LWA will work with the Assistant Director of Operations to set daily work schedules and tasks, and will lead the Warehouse staff in the completion of those tasks and other assigned duties and responsibilities. The LWA will also coordinate as necessary with AFAC’s drivers in the movement and delivery of food supplies. The LWA will assist in the direction of volunteers who help with our daily food distributions and the many tasks assigned to our volunteers. The LWA is responsible for the safe handling of food, equipment, and in all matters pertaining to the operation of the warehouse.

Key Responsibilities:

Support Staff

  • Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Operations, the LWA will oversee and assist in the receipt, storage, and rotation of all supplies and inventory;
  • Serve as the lead warehouse assistant responsible for the completion of all tasks assigned to the warehouse staff;
  • Support the Assistant Director of Operations in ensuring that all warehouse staff are kept up to date and understand stated performance goals, new initiatives, and AFAC policies and procedures;
  • Maintain a team approach among the warehouse staff to the operations and functioning of the warehouse, and,
  • Serve as needed in the absence of the Assistant Director of Operations.
    Warehouse Operations
  • The LWA is responsible for ensuring that food deliveries, food donations, and outgoing food supplies are properly received and recorded; and that necessary reports, invoices, and other documentation are completed accurately and forwarded in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensure that all food donations and food supplies are sorted and properly stored following appropriate food safety procedures and such procedures as First In, First Out, (FIFO) to maximize useful shelf life and ensure freshness;
  • Make sure that food supplies are available when and where they are needed to meet daily demand;
  • Inspect, maintain, and promptly report any problems with equipment and facilities;
  • Lead a proactive culture of safety in the handling of food and in the operations of the Warehouse among all those assigned to the warehouse including staff and volunteers;
  • Develop, demonstrate, and maintain a culture of accuracy, timeliness, and quality in all tasks assigned to the warehouse;
  • Fulfill all other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director of Operations and Director of Operations.

Position Requirements:

  1. Previous warehouse leadership experience;
  2. The ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast paced environment with frequently conflicting demands;
  3. The ability to work independently and with minimal supervision while exercising flexibility, initiative, good judgment, and discretion;
  4. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills;
  5. The LWA must be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and energetic;
  6. The LWA is an AFAC ambassador to our clients, volunteers, community partners, and donors and must demonstrate a patient and compassionate demeanor at all times;
  7. A demonstrated ability to safely and efficiently operate warehouse equipment;
  8. Ability to lift 50-100 pounds on a regular daily basis;
  9. A demonstrated working knowledge of computers, common office software, and office equipment;
  10. Strong writing and oral communication skills. Fluency in Spanish desirable;
  11. An understanding and a commitment to the principles and values of a community-based nonprofit and the vision, values and mission of AFAC.


  • Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license at time of appointment, and throughout employment.
  • Food Service license is desirable.

The position is full-time (40 hours a week) and is not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Typical work days are Monday through Saturday, with a total of 40 hours worked a week between the hours of 6:00AM and 9:00PM.
